Gray wolf hunt ends tonight in zone 3

Today is the last day for Montana hunters to go after gray wolves in the state's southern region.

Hunters surpassed the 12 wolf quota for wolf management unit three on opening day of general rifle hunting season yesterday, but Fish, Wildlife and Parks rules give hunters 24 hours notice before closing a zone.

That means gray wolf hunting will continue in zone three until a half hour after sunset tonight.

So far, hunters killed 13 wolves in zone three.  The quota for that zone was 12.  Six wolves have been taken in zone 1 in northwestern Montana.  Forty-one wolves can be taken from that area.  Two wolves have been taken in zone two in southwestern Montana.  That area has a quota of 22 wolves.

The gray wolf hunt is the first since the predators were removed from the Endangered Species List this spring.
