PTSD Legislation

The rest of the country may soon copy a Montana program to help combat troops.
The provision will provide returning troops with mental health tests to screen for Post-traumative Stress Disorders. It's a part of the Senate approved Defense Reauthorization bill. Senator Max Baucus backed the measure. Supporters point to a study done in 2008. It shows that nearly 20 percent of veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan suffer from PTSD or depression. Army officials say more soldiers than ever are committing suicide.

Right now, post-combat assessments vary from state to state. The president is expected to sign the Defense Reauthorization bill by September.
