Denver Zoo Newborn Connects with Flathead

A rare newborn at the Denver Zoo has a pretty strong tie to Northwest Montana.

Kalispell, an okapi, was born June 27th. Okapis are the only living relative to the giraffe. They look like a mix of a zebra with a giraffe. The animals are so rare, there are only 89 of them currently in North American zoos.

The Denver zookeeper names all newborns. So how'd she come up with this name?

Kalispell was born just after the zookeeper returned from a trip to the Flathead Valley, one of her favorite places.

Kalispell will grow to be between 400 and 500 pounds, and will stand approximately 5 feet tall at the shoulder.
