It's something many men take for granted. Being able to get a shave at your local barber shop.
One Missoula mens salon can't offer them anymore. That's because they're not licensed to do so.
Montana's Board of Barbers says only barbers are allowed to shave someone.
Steve Everett owns Roosters, a men's grooming salon. He thinks his stylists should be allowed to offer the shaves because they use whats known as a safety razor instead of the traditional straght razor.
State officials say a razor is a razor no matter what it's called. Jeanine Worsech, the Bureau Chief for Business and Occupatioinal and Licensing Bureau, says "The blades are open and available and they touch the skin."
In Montana there's a difference between a barber and a cosmetologist.
Both receive hundreds of hours of training, but barbers are taught how to shave using straight razors.
Safety for both the person being shaved and the one doing the shaving are the reason for the requirement.
Worsech added "That's not part of the cosmetologists curriculum. They're not authorized to do that whether it's a straight razor or what you're classifying as a safety razor."
Everett believes there's a difference. Saying "You know, any 16 year old kid without any prior authorization or training is able to go in and shave their face."
The Roosters franchise does provide training for the cosmetologists, but it's not by certified Montana professionals.
The law is cutting into Steve's bottom line. He says taking away between 20% to 30% of his business or about $2,000 a month.
Everett says "It's difficult as it is when everything's running fine and smooth and now that we're losing that income it's a struggle. It's already a struggle without having to lose that kind of income."
It's not just Steve who's upset though. 300 people signed a petition asking for an exemption for the shaves. One is a man with multiple sclerosis and can't shave himself anymore.
Everett says "He comes in in a wheel chair, once a week. his wife has written a really nice letter saying how much it's meant to him and her and he's really come around and his moral has been much better because he's been able to get the service and now he's not. it's a pretty big disappointment."
Steve has contacted the board to find a solution. And says he'll compromise to get the shaves back, but until then no one's lathering up at Roosters.
